Ribwort Plantain leaf consists of the dried leaves of Plantago lanceolata L., Plantaginaceae. Ribwort plantain is used to alleviate irritation in catarrh of the upper respiratory tract. Ribwort plantain leaf and its characteristic constituents exert anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, spasmolytic and immunostimulatory effects. The pharmacologically active constituents are considered to be mucilage polysaccharides, irridoide glycosides, and phenylethanoids. German Commission E has approved the use of the Ribwort plantain for catarrh of the respiratory passages, inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.
